Mitsuo Kama Memorial Award

Kama_sensei_color_sm.jpg

Mitsuo Kama (1936-2011), a Theatre Nohgaku Affiliated artist, was a treasured mentor and friend to many TN members and Noh Training Project participants. His deep knowledge and performance mastery of Ko style shoulder drum and Kadono style hip drum provided the backbone for NTP noh instrumental instruction for many years. A kind yet exacting teacher who demanded the best from his students, Kama-sensei is remembered with great affection and respect for not only his deep love of noh, but also his tireless efforts to disseminate it outside Japan. The scores he painstakingly wrote out by hand still serve as a uniquely precious resource to those who write, compose and perform English-language noh today.

This award acknowledges accomplishment and / or promise on the musical instruments of noh by an individual who has participated in the Noh Training Project, or through association with Theatre Nohgaku. The recipient of the Mitsuo Kama Memorial Award is chosen by a committee of experienced noh musicians drawn from Theatre Nohgaku’s membership. The award is given as funds allow and when there is an appropriate candidate.

Past Kama Mitsuo Memorial Scholarship recipients are:

2022 Elizabeth Parks
2021 Robert Morris
